When I dance, I am giving my body an opportunity to show and express itself, to exercise and use all the cool stuff like motor skills, gravity, balance, sense of space, etc. When I dance, my body opens to myself as the best caterer, the best hostess, it accepts me unconditionally.
While I dance I become outgoing in my own company, I am entertained by the different body parts, each speaking their own language, and all saying the same thing: “I’m here, follow me, dance me”. When I dance, I untangle the emotions of my heart that got lost in my head, in the past or in the future. I restore them to their natural state of being, to movement. As I dance, I get ideas that I would never occur to me if I were sitting down. It is as if I stop going round and round in circles of ordinary thoughts when I begin to follow the empty space in the room. When I have had a good dance, when I give myself totally to the movement and breath, when I surrender whatever it is that I carry, feel or think, I am moved by that incredible grace which I so often, so desperately, and so persistently seek in the wrong places and in the wrong people. When I have danced, when I think I have danced it all, and I’m still breathing, I discover meaning that makes sense only to me and only at that moment.
Dancing gives me a break from myself, from my thoughts, my stories, criticisms, comparisons, and analyses. When I dance, I’m resting from automated actions and movements. When I dance, I’m resting from whining about situations that I cannot or don’t want to change. When I dance, I’m resting from journeys into the past and future. When I dance, I’m resting from dress rehearsals of my life and searching for a plan B. When I dance, I’m resting from my ego characters’ Olympics. When I dance, I’m resting from my resistances, tensions, confusion, and numbness. Because when I dance, I’m dancing my thoughts, my plans, my characters, my shadows, my past, present, and future. When I dance that which is already in movement, and that which is already moving gets my attention, my awareness, my light, my permission to freely express itself and by doing so release, and transform itself so that it can find the embrace of compassion, which brings that precious sense of peace and stillness. At such moments sometimes days, months, years, lifetimes are rested…
How does it feel when you dance? Only you know the answer. Welcome!
